Programs and Curriculum

Higher Learning Academy is a certified California State Preschool. Applications are currently accepted for children who will be 3 years old on or before September 1st, and 4 years old for income eligible families.

Full-Time California State Preschool

The state-funded preschool program is designed to provide a school readiness program for children. Parent participation is highly encouraged. Parents of participating children must meet income eligibility requirements and must either be employed, in a training program or attending college, or incapacitated.

Parent Involvement

It is not mandatory for parents to participate in any of our programs or events. We strongly encourage parents to do so for the benefit of their child as well as for themselves, as parent participation does play an important role in the operation and success of our program. It is our belief that as parents become involved in the school; they are also becoming involved in their child’s education. Being involved shows the children and the school that parents do care and are interested.

Curriculum Highlights

Our program shows concern for the development of the whole child. All aspects of development – intellectual, emotional, creative, physical, and social are interrelated. Therefore, our curriculum is based on aspects of a child’s growth such as large and small motor skills, the imaginative process, creativity, literature, and language awareness and usage.

Infants – We stimulate your infant and provide them with a caring and nurturing environment where they will thrive and develop. HLA will base your child’s schedule on their own needs. HLA staff will interact and let them explore; many experiences are created throughout the day for your infant to reach their milestones.

Toddlers 2yrs. old – At the toddler age HLA staff will provide experiences to develop your child’s vocabulary like reading to them during circle time. The HLA staff will provide activities where children can express their creativity and individuality like painting. Our staff will follow your child’s cues and begin potty training when they are developmentally ready for it.

3 – 4 yrs. old – In this stage of development HLA staff begins teaching structure by having a consistent routine for them so they are able to anticipate what activity comes next. Teachers follow a thematic curriculum in which children are able to explore fine motor skills, math, language, art and so much more. HLA staff also works on self-regulation by teaching them conscious discipline skills where children are able to calm themselves in stressful situations. These are real life skills that will carry on with them forever.

4 – 5 yrs. old – At this stage HLA staff will prepare your child to get ready for kindergarten by focusing on fine motor skills like writing their name, cutting, counting, shapes, letter sounds and letter identification. HLA staff will plan the curriculum based on your child’s stage of development in order to take your child to the next level of development. They learn and explore their world inside/outside the classroom.

Before & After School (Ages 6 – 13yrs. old) – For our School Age children we drop off and pick up at a few elementary around the area. HLA will provide a meal for them when they arrive at the center.
